In the prestigious resort of Quinta do Lago, a new architectural marvel stands proudly – "The Eclipse" villa, adorned with a sculpture of the same name crafted by the renowned artist, David Harber.
We had the privilege to delve into his fascinating journey, creative process, and inspiration behind his stunning works of art, and today we’re sharing it with you.
David Harber's path to becoming a celebrated sculptor is as unique as his creations.
After a curious career path, from apprentice thatcher, rock climbing instructor, potter, mountaineering cameraman, and owning and running a travelling theatre boat through Europe, he fell, totally by chance, in love with the elegance and engineering of Armillary Spheres.
These ancient timepieces are a marriage of art and science and have been a source of inspiration for the last thirty years, evolving into sculptural forms.
With no formal training, David finds himself often challenged by materials.
"The incredibly hard and unyielding marine-grade stainless steel and the noble subtleties found in bronze which has to be worked and exploited in different ways."
Often taking a lead from nature itself, the magic of a tree canopy, and the beguiling reflection of water as it runs over a stainless steel water feature, all pay homage to nature and are inspirations that he finds in the simplest elements of the natural environment.
About 20 years ago David created a stainless steel Armillary Sphere for a university in London of which HRH the Queen was a patron and this was the first of many official meetings that he has had with her.
However, to David, the greatest joy is seeing the joy on the face of a client as he delivers and unveils a piece. A glorious private chateau in France and a unique and magical water feature have created an abiding friendship with the chateau owner, now client and friend.
Mankind has always created totems, edifices and sculptures as a symbol of ownership, both physical and emotional, of a space and place.
“Having been creating sculptures for 30 years we are now celebrating the legacy that we are hopefully creating.”
All sculptures are made with passion and, importantly, an awareness that they will be bringing pleasure to future generations. The longevity of the sentiment and their aesthetic are paramount, hence the use of only the very best materials.
“We are constantly working on new projects, both private and corporate, airports and hotels, but it is the private commissions where I have the opportunity to interact with the location and the client that brings me the most joy. “
